An analysis of musical performance anxiety levels and emotional intelligence levels of secondary and high school students of state conservatoires according to some variables

Abstract (EN)
In this study; music performance anxiety and emotional quotient levels of music students in secondary and high school departments of conservatory were examined with respect to selected various independent variables and it was examined whether there is a correlation between musical performance concerns and emotional intelligence of students or not, and the level of relationship was measured. The study was conducted in relational screening model. The study group in this study also constitutes the entire accessible part of the study domain. The domain and working group of the study consisted of state conservatories affiliated to universities with secondary and high school departments in Turkey. According to this, 10 state universities in different provinces were involved in the study. These schools were Dokuz Eylül University State Conservatory, Eskişehir Anadolu University State Conservatory, Hacettepe University State Conservatory, Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory, Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory, Istanbul University State Conservatory, Uludağ University State Conservatory, Mersin University State Conservatory, Akdeniz University Antalya State Conservatory, Cukurova University State Conservatory. A total of 840 students, 587 of which were female and 253 of which were male, took part in the study. Study-related applications were carried out between March and May of 2016-2017 academic year. In the study, the Music Performance Anxiety Scale (MPK_E) for Kenny adolescents adaptation to Turkish of which was arranged by Yurdabakan and Aydın (2017) and the Emotional Intelligence Scale (DZÖ_E) for adolescents, which was developed by Küçükkaragöz, Aydın and Yurdabakan (2016) were used. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was seen that there was a significant difference between the Music Performance Anxiety and gender, instrument, class grade, achievement status, daily practice time and first performance age variables. It was observed that there was a significant correlation between emotional quotient level, age and grade level of students. Also, it was found that there was a negative and significant correlation between music performance anxiety levels and emotional quotient levels of middle school conservatory students. However, no significant correlation was found between music performance anxiety levels and emotional quotient levels of high school students. The findings obtained from the study were interpreted in relation with the related literature and suggestions were made.
