Abstract (EN)
Objective: In our study, we planned to quantitatively determine the differences in abdominal fat and muscle area distribution in non-contrast abdominal CT images of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients compared to individuals without a diagnosis of DM and to evaluate the findings together with clinical and laboratory data. Materials and Methods: In our study, the abdominal CT images of the who werw diagnosed with type 2 DM and had non-contrast abdominal CT images and the control group of similar age and gender, were examines retrospectively at the İzzet Baysal Training and Research Hospital. Quantitative data on abdominal fat and muscle areas were obtaned from CT images with the "Asanj-Morphometry Software" program. Resulst: A total of 283 people, 144 in the patient group and 139 in the control group were included in the study. TFA, VFA and VFA/SFA ratio werw found to be significantly higher in the patient group. A significant increase in TMFA and a significant decrease in TMA were detected in the patient group. While no significant relationship was found between fasting plasma glucose(FPG) and HbA1c values and VFA in the patient group, a positive significant relationship was found between it and the VFA/SFA ratio. With ROC analysis, the cut-off value fort he VFA value in predicting the risk of type 2 DM was determined as 262.97 cm², and the cut-off value fort he VFA/SFA ratio was 1.403. Conclusion: The significant increase in VFA and VFA/SFA ratio in patients diagnosed with type 2 DM compared to patiens without a diagnosis of DM supports that the increase in VFA and VFA/SFA ratio is associated with type 2 DM. The higher of abdominal myosteatosis in the DM group compared to the control group suggested that there may be a relationship between type 2 Dm and abdominal myosteatosis independent of age and gender. While no ralationship was found between FPG and HbA1c and VFA, a positive significant relationship was detected with VFA/SFA suggesting that the VFA/SFA ratio may be an earlier marker for the risk of type 2 DM.
