Electrophysiological and clinical investigation of facial nerve conduction in dogs

Abstract (EN)

Facial paralysis; facial nerve dysfunction may be due to peripheral facial nerve disease due to otitis media-interna, trauma, hypothyroidism, middle/inner ear neoplasia, or polyneuropathies. When the studies on the facial nerve were investigated, it was seen that there were not enough studies in the field of veterinary medicine, and the studies were generally limited to experimental animals and small patient groups experiencing facial paralysis. In this thesis we conducted, facial nerve electromyelography data were divided into gender, head structure, age and cotralateral groups. These groups were compared in terms of amplitude, latency and distance. As a result of our study, amplitude and latency data of the facial nerve were obtained. In our study, electromyelographic data of the facial nerve were obtained with a high number of cases. Since these data were obtained from dogs without facial paralysis, they can be considered as reference values. This study included 50 dogs, 36 male and 14 female, of different breeds and ages, brought to Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Veterinary Faculty Animal Hospital Surgery Clinic and operated for various indications. For induction, 4 mg/kg of propofol intravenously was used in dogs included in the study. Anesthesia was continued with sevoflurane after intubation. Otovideoscopic examinations were performed and the findings were noted. In the study, it was observed that there was no difference between gender, age and contralateral values, but head structure made a difference in distance measurements. Since brachycephalic and mesocephalic races can be compared in terms of head structure in our study, it is recommended to carry out more standardized studies.
