Evaluating of prevalance of hip dysplasia in dogs

Abstract (EN)
This study aimed at determining differences between classification and grading of PennHIP dignostic method using radiographic images of hip diysplasia frequently seen in dogs. The study material was consisted of a total of 58 stray dogs as 24 male and 34 female within Afyonkarahisar province. Dogs were allocate into 3 groups. Group I contained 2 years-old and under 27 dogs as 9 male and 18 female, group II had between 3 and 3 y.o. 15 dogs as 8 male and 7 female and group III was 5 y.o and over 16 dogs as 7 male and 9 female. To determine hip dysplasia animals were anaesthesized with xylazine HCl and ketamine HCl combination and then using 3 different methods standard ventrodorsal (SVD), distraction and compression radiographic images were taken and images were further transferred to a digital medium. Distraction index (DI) and compression index (CI) and Norberg Angle (NA) was determined by means of radiographic images of SVD. For the identification and grading of hip dysplasia BVA/KC criteria was considered on NA determined by radiographic images of SVD. According to SVD assessment without consideration of groups and sexes, out of 58 dogs, 52 (89.65%) had a variety of dyplastic conditions. When sex considered 19 dogs (32.75%) male and 33 (56.89%) female in 52 dysplastic dogs. In general, group distribution was as follows; 27 dogs (46.55%) were in group I, 12 (20.68%) in group II and 13 (22.41%) in group III. In addition 40 dogs (68.96%) had bialteral and 12 dogs (20.68%) had unilateral displasia in 52 (89.65%) dogs. Values below 0.3 was considered as negative, between 0.3 and 0.5 was suspicious, between 0.5-0.7 was dysplaastic and 0.7 and higher was severe dysplastic according to distraction index (DI) and it was observed that out of 58 dogs, 8 dogs (13.79%) negative, 34 suspicious (58.62%), 15 dysplastic (25.86%) and 1 severe dysplastic (1.72%). When the effects of compression index (CI) on grous were evaluated a statistically significant differences were not seen (p>0,05). Whre CI considered hip joint showed a well comnformity in all age groups independent to hip dyplasia however in advanced hip dysplasia this comformity was disrupted. In conclusion, SVD and distraction methods can diagnose hip dysplasia but when the ratio between DI with SVD was considered only DI should not be used in the diagnosis of hip dysplasia, the combination of DI and SVD should be used in the diagnosis, moreover during DI grading all values higher than 0.3 should be evaluated with NA findings that may improve diagnosis. This study suggest that during diagnosis of hip dysplasia DI findings should be considered together with all findings. Our data conclude that hip dysplasia in stray dogs constitues a problem in Afyonkarahisar region.
