Prevalance of ocular disorders in dogs

This study was carried out on 45 mixed breed male dogs which is different age groups, hosted by Afyonkarahisar Temporary Animal Shelter and included in the castration program. Intramuscular 2 mg / kg xylazine and 5 mg / kg ketamine) was used for anesthesia. In the systematic eye examination performed under anesthesia, eye and accessory structures were examined following the measurement of basal tear production (Schirmer type-II tear test). After atrophy (1% atropine, one drop on each eye) using slith-lamb biomicroscopy, the upper and lower eyelids, third eyelid (palpebra tertia), conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber, iris and lens examination were performed. Corneal examination was performed to determine the lesions by using fluorosein impregnated test sticks. The findings were recorded and recorded in digital media. Of the 45 animals, 34 (73.3%) had ocular lesions. Of the 33 dogs with lesions in their eyes, 11 (33.3%) were 1 aged, 8 (24.3%) were 2 years old, 6 (18.1%) were 3-4 years old, 8 (24.3%) were aged 5 years. and above. In grouping according to the age of 45 dogs, in 1 aged dogs (84%), in 2 aged dogs (%53), in 3 aged dogs (75%), in 4 aged dogs (50%), in 5 aged dogs (88%) eye lesion was detected. Fourteen (31.1%) of 45 dogs had a fluorosein test positive in both eyes. Schirmer tear test measurements of dogs with fluorescein test positive in both eyes were measured average as 6.7 mm / min in the left eye and 4.7 mm / min in the right eye. In the eyes of dogs that do not have any lesions, the measurement of tears on average in the left eye 8.1 mm/min, in the right eye 8.3 mm/min was determined. In the Schimer tear test according to the weight of dogs, average values of measurements in dogs with a range of 10-20 kg; Left eye 5.8 mm/min in the right eye 4.1 mm/min, In dogs with a range of 20-30 kg, the left eye 8.4 mm/min in the right eye 6.9 mm/min, In dogs with a range of 30-40 kg, the left eye at 6.3 mm/min and the right eye was 6.4 mm/min was measured. Cataract was encountered in two dogs (%4,4). One of the dogs was identified by the immature cataract and the other as a mature cataract. The prevalence of ocular disorders is expected to be high in dogs staying in shelters or temporary care homes.
