Posttraumatic bacterial contaminations in dogs before and after osteosynthesis

Abstract (EN)

İn this study, post-traumatic bacterial contaminations in dogs before and after osteosynthesis was carried out to investigate. In the study 15 dogs is used, in different age, race and sex presented with fracture complaints and brought to Adnan Menderes University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Small Animal Clinic, Departement of Surgery. Surgical conditions and techniques suitable for dogs underwent osteosynthesis. 2 samples before osteosynthesis and 1 sample after osteosynthesis and during nail extirpation were taken and bacteriological culture was performed. Intramuscular ceftriaxone for 7 days, as a way to all patients underwent postoperatively (20mg/kg/12 hours). Patients are called to clinic at 21 th day of their postoperative, radiologic checks are made and if fracture healed properly, pins are removed. At the same time swaps are taken from the removed pins? surface and bacteriologic culture is made. While osteosynthesis and pin extirpation is done, blood count test is applied to all of the patients.Because infection etiology is multifactorial, evaluation is done by considering many factors. For that purpose, age of the patient, radiographic abnormalitie exsitance before the implantation, soft tissue damage, type of the fracture, time between injury and intervention, surgical apperal type, materials used in internal fixation informations are evaluated.In conclusion the most populating bacteria is coagulase negative staphylococci during our studies. In our studies, gathered bacteria strains mostly are danofloxacin (%80,9) and penicilin (%66,6) sensitive. During orthopedical operations, just like all other operations asepsis and antisepsis rules must be obeyed.In conclusion, it is very important that postoperative controls may not be done only hematologically, at the same time postoperative controls may be done clinically and radiographically.
