ABSTRACT THE EFFECT OF THE EDUCATIONAL PATIENT COUNSELINGROLE OF THE NURSE ON ANXIETY AND SURGICAL DECISION IN PATIENTS FOR WHOM CABG SURGERY IS SUGGESTED AFTER CORONARY ANGIOGRAPHY It was aimed to determine the effect of the educational patient counseling role of the nurse on anxiety and surgical decision in patients for whom CABG surgery was suggested after coronary angiography. This studywas a quasi-experimental study with control and experimental groups, conducted on patients who underwent coronary angiography (CA) in the Intensive Care Unit at Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University Health Application and Research Hospital and for whom CABG was suggested. While the data of the control group (CG) of the study were collected between 27.01.2016 and 25.05.2016, the data of the experimental group (EG) were collected between 09.11.2017 and 15.04.2017. The EGpatients were informed and trained by the researcher about CA andCABG; whereas, the CG patients continued the routine application of the clinic. 80 patients, including 40 patientsin control group and 40 patientsin experimental group, were included in the study. The data were collected using Patient Diagnosis Form and STAI. Statistical analyses were carried out in the SPSS 23 for Windows packaged software and the value of p<0.05 was accepted for the statistical significance. The patients were similar in terms of other descriptive characteristics features except for the variable of age (p>0.05). It was determined that 77.5% of CG and 100% of EGhad knowledge about CA; whereas 70% of EGand 3.2% of CGgot information only from the nurse. It was also determined that 100.0% of EGand 30.0% of CG got information about CABG surgery; whereas 72.5% of EG and 8.3% of CG obtained information only from the nurse (p<0.05). 10.0% of CG and 70.0% of EGindicated that they found the information they obtained sufficient (p<0.05). 47.5% of CG and 62.5% of EGaccepted CABG surgery after CA. Regarding the acceptance of CABG surgery; 57.9% of CG and 68.0% of EGstated that the information they obtained was effective (p>0.05). According to STAI I, moderate state anxiety was determined in 57.5% of CG and 62.5% of EG(p<0.05). It was concluded that the information provided to EGpatients, for whom CABG surgery was suggested after CA, about CAandCABG surgery was usefulforEGpatients to acceptCABG surgery and have lesssurgery-relatedanxiety.
