Investigation of social appearance anxiety levels and psychosocial adaptation to the disease of patients with coronary artery bypass graft surgery

This study is a content type study that includes the aim of examining the social appearance anxiety levels and the variables that show the psychosocial adjustment status of the patients who have had visual artery bypass graft surgery. This research is a descriptive type of research. The population of the study consisted of patients who had undergone bypass surgery at Ankara Başkent University Hospital and applied to the Cardiovascular Surgery Polyclinic, and the sample consisted of 58 patients. Data collection was carried out with "Social Appearance Anxiety Scale, Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Self-Report Scale, Patient Descriptive Form". Data analysis was done with SPSS 21.0 program. The relationship between the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale and the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Self-Report Scale and its sub-dimension scores were analyzed with the Spearman correlation test. Parametric tests were used for the mean scores of the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale. Psychosocial Adjustment to Disease Self-Report Scale and sub-dimension mean scores were analyzed with non-parametric tests. According to the results of the study, the mean scores of the patients on the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale were determined as (41.00±13.15). The scores that the patients got from the scale were determined as a minimum of 16, a maximum of 74, and a median of 44.5. According to the results of the study, it was determined that women, literate or primary school graduates experienced more social appearance anxiety. The mean scores of the patients from the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Self-Report Scale were determined as (28.84±14.88). The scores that the patients got from the scale were determined as a minimum of 5, a maximum of 79, and a median of 26. It was observed that 43 (74.1%) of the patients participating in the study had a good psychosocial adjustment level. According to the results of the study, the level of psychosocial adjustment to the disease was lower for women than for men, and the adaptation to the professional environment of patients aged 60 years and younger was found to be lower. The compliance of the patients working with the occupational environment sub-dimension was found to be lower than those who did not work. It was determined that the patient group, 2-6 months after the surgery, had a lower level of compliance with the disease and its sub-dimensions, the occupational and social environment, compared to the patient group, which took 13 months or more. For this reason, it is recommended to provide psychological support for patients who are in the early postoperative period, women and those who continue their working life, regarding their social appearance concerns and their adaptation to the disease
