The effect of planned education given in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery on postoperative kinesiophobia and self-efficacy levels

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of planned education given to patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery on the kinesiophobia and self-efficacy levels of patients. Method: The population of the study consisted of patients who underwent open heart surgery and coronary artery bypass graft surgery in Manisa City Hospital between May 2022-2023 (N=137). Among the patients who agreed to participate in the study, n=41 patients constituted the control group and n=41 patients constituted the experimental group as a result of the power analysis at the 95% confidence interval with the simple randomization method. The study data were obtained using the 'Personal Data Collection Form', 'Patient Follow-up Form', ''Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale (TKS)' and 'Cardiac Surgery Version of the Barnason Efficacy Expectancy Scale'. The patients in the experimental group were given the 'Patient Education Booklet for the Pre- and Post-operative Period in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Surgery' prepared by the researcher based on the literature. For the patients in the control group, verbal information was given according to their clinical routines and other standard practices were continued. Number percent distribution and descriptive statistics were used to define demographic characteristics, chi-square test was used to evaluate the homogeneity of the groups, Mann Whitney U test was used for non-normally distributed data and t-test was used for normally distributed data. Findings: It was found that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the patients in the experimental group within the TKS (p<0.05). It was found that there was no significant difference between the patients in the experimental and control groups in the mean scores of BEES and its sub-dimensions after surgery (p>0.05). In the experimental and control groups, no correlation was found between the preoperative and postoperative TKS mean scores of age and body mass index, and the postoperative BEES scores (p>0.05). Results and Suggestions: It was determined that the planned education helped to reduce the post-operative kinesiophobia behaviors in the experimental group and to reach sufficient self-efficacy levels after discharge. However, it was found that the postoperative results did not differ significantly between the two groups.In this respect, it is recommended to contribute to the literature by working with larger sample groups with similar characteristics on the effect of planned education given in the preoperative period on kinesiophobia and self-efficacy levels.
