Examining the effects of some thickeners used in cosmetic products on the viscosity of a basic baby shampoo formulation

Abstract (EN)

The formulations of baby shampoos are generally difficult formulations to thicken depending on the surface active matter of them. The reason of this state is that amphoteric and nonionic surfactants are used in higher percentages compared to anionic surfactants in the formulations of baby shampoo. For that reason, choosing the thickener material is one of the vital processes for the developing of baby shampoo formulations. In this study, basic baby shampoo formulations are formed and then the effects of 3 thickeners on these formulations are examined. The Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Lauryl Glucoside (LG) are used as the surfactants in the formulations and the thickeners which includes the combinations of miceller with associative and miceller are added to the studied formulations. In additon, the effects of LG which is a nonionic surfactants and in the form of Alkyl Polyglucoside are investigated. The power of increasing viscosity of the selected thickeners in the formulations with NaCI is also searched using different percentages of NaCI and thickeners. The studied thickeners include Cocamide DEA (CDEA), Laureth-2 (L-2) and the combination of PEG/PPG-120/10 Trimethylolpropane Trioleate (PEG/PPG-120/10-TT) with L-2. The pH and viscosity values are measured on the formulations that are formed with 3 different thickeners. The results of the experiments are interpreted considering the structure of thickeners and other raw materials used in the formulations.
