Effect of infection control precaution package on compliance and surgical site infection rate in patients undergoing craniotomy

The study was conducted as a randomized controlled intervention study to investigate the effect of the application of the care package on compliance and surgical site infection (SSI) rate in patients undergoing craniotomy . The universe of the study consisted of patients who underwent craniotomy at Çukurova University Balcalı Hospital Health Application and Research Center and the sample consisted of 102 patients (intervention group= 51, control group=51) who met the inclusion criteria and volunteered to participate in the study. The Surgical Site Infections Prevention Package consisting of 3 parts as pre-, during and postoperative was applied to the patients in the intervention group. Routine care of the relevant clinic continued in the control group. Both patient groups were followed up for SSI for 30 days after the surgery. The data of the study were collected using the Patient Identification Information Form, Surgical Site Infections Prevention Package Form, and Postoperative Infection Follow-up Form prepared by the researcher according to literature. In addition to descriptive statistics, t test and Chi- Square test were used in the evaluation of the data. When the presence of infection was compared between the intervention and control groups in the study; less SSI was observed in patients who applied the precaution package (p>0.05). When the compliance with the SSI precaution package was compared with the groups; There was a significant difference between the groups in the preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative and total compliance averages with the perioperative processes (p<0.05). As a result; it was determined that the Surgical Site Infection Prevention Package was a clinically effective method in reducing SSI in patients undergoing craniotomy. In line with these results, the use of prevention packages can be recommended to reduce SSI.
