Studies on some antibiotic susceptibility of group a beta-hemolitic streptococcus bacteria isolated from throat cultures of children

Abstract (EN)

In this study, throat cultures were taken from 802 children of three day care centers in Ankara, betwen Jan. 99 and Sep. 1999. 50 ( 6,2 % ) Beta-hemolitic streptococcus were isolated from throat cultures of 802 children. Results showed that 37 strains ( 74 % ) were presumptively identified as group A beta-hemolitic streptococcus ( GABHS ) by susceptibility to Bacitrasin and Trimethoprim-sulmethoxazole ( SXT ). All GABHS tested were susceptible to Bacitrasin and were resistant to Trimethoprim-sulmethoxazole ( SXT ). Penicillin G, Amikacin, Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, Chloramphenicol, Tetracycline, Erythromycin were used for antibiotic susceptibility tests. Antibiotic susceptibility of GABHS were tested by standard disk difussion method. All GABHS were susceptibile to all antibiotics studied.IV None of the strains was resistant to Penicillin or Erythromycin. Erythromycin can be an alternative antibiotic to Penicillin in the case of allergic situation. Maximum isolataion rate of GABHS were found especially in May and June. We conclude that Penicillin is still the drug of choice in GABHS since we did not observe any resistance to Penicillin in all strains.
