Abstract (EN)
When examining studies on modality, a subject that originated in logic and later attracted interest in linguistics, it is evident that the position, nature, and forms of expression of this category have been studied in detail, especially in the West. It is well known that to form a systematic portrait of the Turkish language, it is necessary to examine the status of this category in Turkish dialects. As Plungian stated, "Every language has its semantic essence that it shares with other languages of the world." This study aims to reveal the treatment of the category of modality and its means of expression in Kyrgyz language. It proceeds is parallel to the generally accepted classification of modality presented in Frank Robert Palmer's 2001 book "Mood and Modality", which is prominent in the field. Since Palmer's work has established itself as a comprehensive reference, frequently cited in the literature, it was deemed appropriate to analyse the data obtained in Kyrgyz language based on this classification. This thesis aims to establish a formal direction and create a basic model for the modality category in Contemporary Kyrgyz language, an area often described as having boundaries that are difficult to define. The study consists of four sections, including the Introduction and Conclusion sections. The Introduction section provides information on the subject, purpose, scope, limitations, and research materials. The first section reviews the literature on the origin and development of grammatical modality. Theoretical approaches in Western, Turkish, and Kyrgyz language are presented in order, and the developments and perspectives in these regions are compiled. Palmer and his approach to modality are discussed at the end of this section. The second section is the analysis section, in which the linguistic materials selected from the works we compiled from Kyrgyz language are the types and markers of modality are described. Each type of modality is defined, explained, and highlighted, followed by relevant examples from Kyrgyz language. Finally, the conclusions and evaluation are presented. The conclusion section includes an evaluation of the grammatical modality tools identified in Kyrgyz language as a result of the analysis.
