The potential of cryptocurrencies to become reserve currency

Abstract (EN)

Trade, which is forced to change with the advancing technology and the increase in the prevalence of internet usage, has brought new concepts and practices to our lives while creating changes in the form of money. In consequence of digitalization process come into the world, and its results to economy reflections, it has brought to a new digital economy evolution. Finally, the currency has been gradually lose its physical asset; therefore it has given risen to create a cashless society with the help of digitalization. The last circle of this evolution is Bitcoin found that has got Blockchain tecnology. Bitcoin with the potantial of high transaction speed, and low transaction costs, it can play a big role in global economy. In this study, cryptocurrency has been turned to account to be potantial of cryptocurrency, to be expected reserve currency not only with its facilities and benefits; but also with, it is under difficulties position. In this context, the biggest challenge which it has to overcome is volatility of its prices. In order to be understood clearly, the volatility of its prices dimension, Bitcoin and dollar index value, euro index value and gold between 2015-2020 it has been calculated of monthly price changes of standart deviation. Bitcoins standart deviation is higher than other variables. The excessive of unstable equilibrium in its proses, it gives cause for speculation about it shows that it is high-risk currency. As a result, cryptocurrency has got alot of difficulties which has to be come through, in order to be use of expected reserve currency. With the facilities, gives a chance to radical innovations, it may have change in future; but nowadays, it has slim-chance to be access for reserve currency.
