ABSTRACTMEASUREMENT AND COMPARISON OF RENAL APPARENTDIFFUSION COEFFICIENTS (ADC) BETWEEN CHRONIC RENALFAILURE AND NORMAL KIDNEYS BY DIFFUSION WEIGHTEDMAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGINGPurpose: The aim of this study was to measure and comparethe renal apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) in chronic renalfailure (CRF) and healthy volunteers by using diffusion-weightedmagnetic resonance imaging (MRI).Materials and methods: Diffusion weighted (DW) echo-planar(EPI) MR imaging was performed to 20 patients with chronicrenal failure and 45 healthy volunteers during breath hold. ADCsof b100, b600 and b1000 values were calculated from both renalcortex and medulla.Results: In normal kidneys, mean ADC values were0,00339±0,00045, 0,00237±0,00023, 0,00193±0,00016mm2/sn in cortex; 0,00298±0,00047, 0,00213±0,00019 and0,00171±0,00015 mm2/sn in medulla for b100, b600 andb1000, respectively. In CRF, mean ADC values were0,00323±0,00055, 0,00209±0,00033, 0,00153±0,00011mm2/sn in cortex; 0,00281±0,00067, 0,00183±0,00035 and0,00146±0,00016 mm2/sn in medulla for b100, b600 andb1000, respectively. ADC values were significantly higher incortex than medulla for b100, b600 and b1000 in normal kidneysand CRF. The ADC measurements of renal cortex and medullafor b600 and b1000 were significantly lower than normal kidneysin chronic renal failure (CRF) kidneys.2
