Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectof 25-dihidroksi D3 vitamin levels to serum Th1(Interferon-gamma)/Th2(IL-4), IL-10,Th17, IL-23levels in disease progress and contribution to clinical treatment and diseaseremission in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Materials and Methods: This study included 225 individuals (145 IBDpatients; 48 with Crohn disease (CD), 97 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 80 healthycontrols) who admitted to Medical Faculty Hospital of Çukurova University fordiagnosis and treatment. We analysed 25(OH)D3 levels for 225 individualsconsequently and we analysed interleukin[serum Th1 (Interferon-gamma)/Th2 (IL-4),Treg (IL-10), Th17 (IL-17), IL-23]levels for 70 of 80 healthy controls, 65 of 97 patientswith UC and 43 of 48 patients with Crohn disease. We analysed serum Th1(Interferongamma)/Th2(IL-4), IL-10, Th17, IL-23 cytokin levels from the blood and serumsamples obtained by ELISA and HPLC methods. Vitamin D levels were classified as?15 and ?15?g/l, and the level?15 ?g/l was accepted as vitamin D deficiency.Results: In both patient groups and healthy control group, we compared vitaminD levels and cytokine levels. The Vitamin D levels were significantly different inpatients and controls respectively (15,9±10,1 vs 19,6±9,8 p=0.001).In dual comparisons(control group vs patients with UC and control group vs patients with Crohn disease)there were significant differences between Crohn disease and control group, whereas nosignificant difference between patients with UC and CD (p=0.439). It has been revealedthat vitamin D deficiency leads to increased severity of both UC and CD and increasedlevels of IL-17. Variations of IL-17 levels in patients with UC were statisticallysignificant in vitamin D deficiency (p:<0,05).It has also been revealed that vitamin Ddeficiency leads to increased severity of both UC and CD and increased levels of IL-23.Variations in IL-23 was statistically significant in patients with Crohn disease andvitamin D deficiency (p:<0,05) but not in UC patients with vitamin D deficiency.Although there was no statistically significant relation between levels of INF Gammaand vitamin D in CD-active group, there was a weak negative correlation (r:-0,15,p:0,57). IL-10 levels were not different between groups.Conclusion: Low levels of vitamin D is a significant parameter in patients withIBD. According to these results it can be suggested that vitamin D can have animportant role in Th1/Th2/Th17 and IL-23 immune responses. However, we believethat relation between vitamin D and IBD will be understood clearly with further studieson this subject.KeyWords: Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn Disease, Vitamin D and Cytokines.
