Serum magnesium levels in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and its effect on cardiac comorbid diseases

Abstract (EN)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease that disrupts airflow in the respiratory tract as a result of chronic inflammation and causes systemic side effects. In the presence of COPD, the presence of hyperexpanded emphysematous lungs and the long-term effects of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction on the right side of the heart lead to pulmonary hypertension and subsequently right atrial and right ventricular hypertrophy, causing ECG changes and cardiac comorbidities. Magnesium (Mg) is an ion that plays a role in the transmission of electrolytes and can change the cell membrane potential. Mg, which also improves lung functions with its bronchodilator effect, is not currently included in the diagnosis, examination and treatment guidelines for COPD. In this study, hemogram, biochemistry, cardiac enzymes and ECG were taken from healthy volunteers with stage 3 (30% ≤FEV1<50%) and stage 4 (FEV1<30% or FEV1<50% and chronic respiratory failure) COPD. In COPD phosphorus, lactate dehydrogenase, total cholesterol, red cell distribution width, mean platelet volume, vitamin B12, antistroptolysin O, thyroid stimulating hormone, sedimentation, mass CKMB, heart rate with troponin, P amplitude in V1, QTc Distance in those with COPD , R amplitude in V1, S amplitude in V6, R/S ratio in V1, P wave axis are significantly higher than in healthy volunteers and creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, Mg, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, total protein, albumin, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean erythrocyte hemoglobin concentration, iron, total iron binding capacity, free T3, QRS amplitude, S amplitude in V1, R amplitude in V6, R/S ratio in V6 were significantly lower than in healthy volunteers. Hypertension and hyperlipidemia were found to be risk factors for CVD in those with COPD. Mg level was <2 mg/dl in those with COPD, and there was no correlation with troponin and mass CK-MB values; Therefore, it can be said that changes in Mg levels do not increase the risk of CVD
