Abstract (EN)
COPD is a progressive, chronic disease with acute inflammation. Respiratory infections play an important role in the etiology, pathogenesis and development of COPD. Bacterial factors are 40-50% responsible for the inflammation observed in COPD. In this study, we aimed to identify the frequency of Moraxella catarrhalis isolation and antibiotic sensitivity in the patients suffering from COPD in the province of Bolu. The study was carried out on 124 patients consulting the Faculty of Medicine at Abant İzzet Baysal University and the Department of Respiratory Diseases and Tuberculosis at İzzet Baysal State Hospital between October 2009 and March 2010 and clinically diagnosed with COPD inflammation. In 10 out of 98 patients who had sputum culture a reproduction of Moraxella catarrhalis was determined. A nitrocefin disc was used for the beta-lactamase test of isolated Moraxella catarrhalis. Agar microdilution and E test were used for antibiogram sensitivity.Moraxella catarrhalis reproduced in 10,2% (n=10) of the cultured sputum samples. As a result of the sensitivity tests, 90% of the strains were found to be beta-lactamase positive, 90% were resistant to ampicillin and 10% were resistant to cotrimoxazole 100% of the strains were sensitive to cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, erythromycin, tetracycline and ciprofloxacin. The study concluded that the findings of the frequency of Moraxella catarrhalis reproduced in the sputum samples taken from the patients suffering from COPD inflammation and the antibiotic sensitivity were consistent with the other studies.Key words: COPD inflammation, Moraxella catarrhalis, Beta-lactamase, Antibiotic sensitivity
