Assessment of illness adaptation and quality of life among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract (EN)
Aim: The purpose of this study was to illness adaptation and quality of life among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Materials and Methods: This study which is descriptive and cross sectional was conducted with 208 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the chest disease clinic hospitalize in a university hospitals in Manisa, Turkey (West Anatolia). The data were collected by means of patient information form, Adaptation Evaluation Form and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). Descriptive and correlation were used in statistical analysis. Arithmetic averages, standart deviation (sd), pergentage were used in statistical analysis. Results: The average age of patients were 65.23±11.04 (42-87) years, 76.0% were male. It was found that the subscales scores of Adaptation Evaluation Form were for Self Concept Adaptation 11.71±6.68; for Physiologic Adaptation 10.09±5.43; for Role Function Adaptation 6.24±3.75, respectively. Also, it was found to be SGRQ activity score was 67.0±25.5; SGRQ symptom score was 63.4±25.5; SGRQ impact score was 54.1±24.8. A positive correlation was defined between the subscales scores of Adaptation Evaluation Form and SGRQ subscales scores. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that Self Concept Adaptation was the most affected area in illness adaptation, also Activity was the most affected area in quality of life among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and their quality of life was adversely affected as the levels of Self Concept Adaptation, Physiologic Adaptation, Role Function Adaptation decreased.
