Clinic and bacteriologic analyses of patients with chronic otitis media

Aim: To analyze microbiology of chronic otitis media, and to compare preoperative and intraoperative bacterial cultures of chronic otitis media. Material and Method: This study was conducted between 2016-2018 in Microbiology and Otorhinolaryngology Department. Swab cultures were obtained through the external ear canal preoperatively in polyclinic conditions. Middle ear swabs and mastoid granulation tissue were collected intraoperatively, respectively. Demographic data, microbiology and antibiotic susceptibility were compared in both group. Results: Two hundred seventy eight patients with chronic otitis media enrolled in the study. Out of the 278 cases, 86 no bacteria were detected. P.aeruginosa(n=44), S.aureus(n=27), Proteus(n=16) and E.coli(n=10) were most common grown bacteria in both groups. Most common identified groups gram(+) bacteria (n=92), non-fermenter bacteria (55), Enterobactericeae (n=42), anaerob bacteria (n=3) and fungi (n=17), respectively. Although gram (+) coccus were higher in polyclinic groups, Enterobactericeae were higher intraoperative groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: P.aeruginosa and S.aureus most common bacteria in chronic otitis media. Similar bacteria were grown in polyclinic and operative groups. We can conclude that to perform microbiologic analysis before treatment in chronic otitis media is very useful as long as to take care during obtain middle ear swabs Key Words: Antibiotic sensitivity, chronic otitis media, microbiology
