Abstract (EN)

Human beings have formed urban and rural settlement morphologies and shaped their development within the framework of natural environmental dynamics such as climate, vegetation, topography, water resources and socio-cultural environmental dynamics such as lifestyle, beliefs, production activities and technology. Urban or rural settlements developed by natural and socio-cultural environmental dynamics reveal settlements that are in harmony with nature, do not disrupt nature, and have their own unique and identity. However, migration to cities due to many reasons such as technological development, labor demand, changes in people's needs and expectations, which started with the Industrial Revolution and still continues, has been reflected in urban and rural settlements as in every field. The technology developed with industrialization has brought mechanization in agriculture and animal husbandry and created many problems with social, economic and cultural dimensions such as unemployment, inheritance division, inadequate education and health opportunities in rural areas. These migrations, which still continue today, cause the rural architectural heritage to fall into disrepair and either be destroyed or new structures to be built with non-traditional techniques. As long as this cycle continues, the unique settlement morphology, architecture and cultural structure of many rural settlements, whose population is decreasing day by day, are disappearing. In this thesis, it is aimed to reveal the place and importance of village rooms, which contain both architectural and cultural features of rural settlements facing extinction, in rural settlement morphology, architecture and culture. The subject of the thesis was ten villages located in the rural areas of Keskin district of Kırıkkale province. In the selection of the villages, villages with village rooms were selected by conducting a pilot study. Literature and field studies were conducted within the scope of the thesis. With the literature study, the concepts of settlement, settlement patterns, settlement dynamics and village room, which constitute the conceptual framework, were discussed. At the same time, population, settlement and archive information about the villages were accessed. In the field study, on-site observations, examinations and interviews were made, surveys of the village rooms were made and their architectural features were revealed. With all the data obtained, the settlement morphologies of the villages, the typologies of village rooms and the place, importance and problems of village rooms in settlements were revealed. As a result, it has been seen that the village rooms in rural settlements, which are disappearing day by day, have an important place both in their architecture and in the settlement and culture of the villages where they are located. This thesis study, in which rural settlements and village rooms with social functions are inventoried to be transferred to the future, will form the basis for the creation of rural development projects for rural settlements, which have become more important in recent years due to reasons such as globalization, intense urbanization, climate change, air pollution, epidemic diseases. 2023, xxvii + 249 Pages Keywords: Rural, Natural and socio-cultural environment, Settlement dynamics, Migration, Sharp.
