Stored items with fixed finite lifetimes are usually referred to as perishable items in the inventory literature. Fresh foods, groceries, pharmaceuticals, composite materials, sheet metal, packaged chemical products and blood and its derivatives are a few examples of perishable goods found in a wide variety of industries. Due to their common occurrence and importance, a broad literature has developed over the years on management of perishable inventories. However, the existing literature is insufficient in addressing the mostly encountered setting where items have fixed shelf lives, ordering costs are not negligible and age of inventory and pricing are taken into account. We consider coordinated dynamic pricing and inventory decisions for perishable products in a periodically reviewed inventory system with a time and price dependent random demand. We consider the products with a fixed shelf life time and use dynamic programming to model this system in order to determine the optimal price and inventory decisions. In the static pricing case, a stochastic DP model provides optimal policy indicating the proper time to order, optimal amount of ordering size and a single price that should be charged to the products. For the dynamic pricing case, different prices may be chosen at each state. We prove certain structural characteristics of the optimal solution and also analyze the effect of different parameters on the optimal solution through numerical experiments. Moreover, we examined optimal pricing policy properties by analyzing optimal price behavior versus inventory size and shelf lifetime. In addition, we develop simple-to-implement heuristics for the pricing and inventory control and investigate the effectiveness of these heuristics.
