Unglazed Ceramics Found in Kubad-Abad palace excavation

SUMMARYThe Kubad-Abad Külliye is known as the unique Seljuk Palatial Külliye, builtby Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad between 1226 and 1236. It is located at the southeastern shore of Beyşehir Lake, on an alluvial plain at the skirts of Anamas, TaurusMountains.This study investigates the unglazed ceramics in Kubad-Abad, Kız Kalesi andKüçük Saray, which were found by the excavation study under the leadership ofProfessor Rüçhan Arık. These samples are still stored in the Kubad-AbadExcavation House. The scope of this initial study has been limited to the years 1982and 1990, because there has not been a detailed and comprehensive study on theunglazed ceramics found in the Kubad-Abad Excavation Study.Considered to be ceramic ware intended for daily use, these pieces have beengrouped according to their place of unearthing, namely Kız Kalesi and Küçük Saray,and have been examined according to the categories of brim, bottom, handle,mouthpiece, lid, and broken body piece. Several properties, including claycharacteristics, shaping and firing methods, form properties, and decoration stylesand motifs have been examined for each piece recovered.As with many Anatolian city centres, many glazed and unglazed items ofvarious techniques and styles recovered from Kubad-Abad have been attributed tothe Middle Age. However, the fact that unglazed ceramics from the Middle Age areabundant and have similar properties make it very difficult to classify and dateindividual objects. On the other hand, coins, glazed tiles, glassware, mosaics andglazed ceramics discovered alongside these unglazed items, as well as comparisonsto the other unglazed items unearthed in the Middle Age centres of Anatolia help todate the unglazed ceramics of the Turkish era to between the 12th and 14th centuries.The pre-Turkish era unglazed ceramics discovered in the Kız Kalesi must belong tothe Byzantine era. Those ceramic pieces found beneath the Seljuk layer around theKüçük Saray, meanwhile, are dated to the Prehistoric era.
