Effects of sulfur forms and doses on yield and quality properties of tobacco

Abstract (EN)

The study was conduct to determine the effects of sulfur form and doses on the yield and quality properties of tobacco. Field trial was carried out according to the experimental design of split plots in random blocks with three replications in Tokat-Kazova in 2021. In the study, Erbasma tobacco variety, three sulfur forms (ammonium sulfate, calcium sulfate, elemental sulfur) and four sulfur doses (0, 2.5, 5, 10 kg/da) were used. The differences in plant height, leaf number, leaf width, leaf length, rutin and chlorogenic acid content were found to be statistically insignificant. Dry leaf yield, nicotine ratio, reducing sugar ratio, quality grade index, sulfur concentration and total nitrogen content were determined to be statistically significant. With sulfur application, plant height, number of leaves, leaf width, leaf length, reducing sugar rate, total nitrogen content, dry leaf yield, nicotine ratio, grade index, sulfur concentration was varied in between, respectively 77.5-85.1 cm, 30.27-32.80 pieces, 10.07-11.10 cm, 20.53-21.67 cm, 1.70-2.38%, 2.42-3.70%, 150-215.7 kg/da, 0.49-1.13%, 51.56-57.66%, 0.34-0.44%. It has been observed that sulfur application increases yield and quality in tobacco cultivation. As a result, it was seen that calcium sulfate form and 2.5 kg/da dose were applicable in terms of yield, and calcium sulfate form and 5 kg/da dose were applicable in terms of quality grade index. Furthermore, for low nicotine tobacco could be preferred in plant production at 10 kg/da dose of elemental sulfur form.
