School administrators' teachers' students' and parets' expectations, opinions and suggestions regarding the cultural transfer and developing cultural identity

Abstract (EN)

Activities of education and teaching are the most significant elements of gaining cultural transfer and cultural identity. The information that the students get from family and environment may form a specific base. The cultural transfer given in the schools is a conscious case by the teachers and administrators. It is difficult to gain the success with the ones who have no knowledge about their past and personal experience. For an education system that wants to be successful, the cultural issues and cultural transfer, should be started to be given and developed since the primary school. The acculturation period of students that starts first in family then in environment and finally in school life, has a certain place in today's modern societies. This period will become more significant for citizens and society by the students going through adulthood and have individual identity. Therefore, the behaviours introducing elements in our education system should be dealt with great care and significance. The aim of this research is to identify the advices, opinions and expectations of administrators, teachers, students and parents at the topic of developing cultural identity and cultural transmission. The study was a qualitative case in a single integrated design. The study as suitable for this case has been carried out in Çandır Ş.Ö.M.S. Küçük Primary School. Two school administrators, 10 teachers and 175 students of Çandır Ş.Ö.M.S. Küçük Primary School located in Antalya, Serik district created the population of the research. In this research, individual interview and document analysis has been used as method of collecting data. As equipments of collecting data, semi-structured individual interview forms based on open-ended questions have been used and for document analysis students' pictures that have been obtained from the "Traditional Children Games" competitions which are held by Directory of Antalya National Education. The data have been analysed by content analysis in which the characteristic of data collecting tools have been taken into consideration. The findings and interpretation of research have been established depending on data analysis. Suggestions have been made on the basis of research results. In the research the administrators think that cultural transfer and developing cultural identity could be possible by giving tangible studies, exercises to the students. The administrators have intensively advised tangible studies and exercises in cultural transfer and developing cultural identity. Teachers think cultural transfer and developing cultural identity is necessary in growing individuals who are beneficial for society and emerging generations who are loyal to their values and give importance to their cultural heritage. Teachers have expressed that being a good model and learning via doing and living are the significant topics that have to be transferred to students in cultural transfer and developing cultural identity. According to students' opinions, cultural and historical travels are the most significant factors in cultural transfer and developing cultural identity. Parents want their children to deal with traditional handicrafts, to make these handicrafts become sustainable, to be informed about cultural transfer and social values, to gain cultural identity and to practise more tangible activities about values education.
