Reflection of cultural imperialism on social media: Example of Halloween on instagram

Globalization that encompasses the world with the developments in communication and information technologies, has threatened cultures. The global communication that allows the interaction of billions of people, has made the contact of cultures inevitable. Accordingly, some Western countries under the leadership of USA have caused cultural imperialism by circulating their cultural values through the media in many geographies. The media dominated by Western powers has given birth to media imperialism by dominating in the context of cultural imperialism in undeveloped and less developed countries. One of the most important factors of cultural and media is special days. The contents about Hallowen have started to take part in Turkish people's social media account. In this context, in the study the threat on Turkish society has been investigated by analyzing the activities of Turkish users on social media related to Halloween which is a tool of cultural imperialism, in private of instagram. By this study, It has been aimed to create awareness in Turkish society and academic circles. This research that has been the first in the literature, has been waited to sheds light on academic and cultural researchs. Along with this keyword Halloween on Instagram. In this way, the ones with most contents were determined by searching Turkish hashtags on instagram wit the key-word of "Hallowen". The content analysis were performed on 3017 datas from Hallowen contents dated 2017, 2018, 2019 have produced by Turkish users. As a result of the findings, it has been seen that the Hallowen content production has been increasing rapidly each year and it has been seen that Hallowen has been started to be adopted and spread in Turkish society. This has pointed out danger both Turkish culture and in terms of both Turkish culture and the national spiritual values of society.
