Analysis of netflix movie credits in the context of the culture industry

This study aimed to evaluate Netflix movie credits in the context of culture industry theory. Developing the theory of the culture industry, Adorno and Horkheimer stated that mass-produced culture industry products, far from creativity and originality, shape individuals and society; they claimed that it legitimizes the dominant system. They also evaluated the cinema, a powerful mass media tool that affects large masses, as a product of the culture industry. When the works of Adorno and Horkheimer are examined, 9 themes that reveal the characteristics of the products of the culture industry (standardization, provoking desire, speed, easy comprehensibility, offering promises, giving clues, producing advertisements, creating the illusion of reality and predictability) have been reached. Based on these titles, Netflix movie credits were analyzed thematically. From a qualitative research perspective, Netflix's 10 movies released between 2018 and 2022 with the highest watch time in the first 28 days (Red Notice, Don't Look Up, Bird Box, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, The Gray Man, Troll, Blood Red Sky, The Platform, All Quiet on the Western Front and Black Crab) were selected as criteria sample. While the credits of these films were analyzed thematically with the descriptive analysis method, 18 analysis units determined under graphic and cinematographic elements were used to make the relationship between technique, aesthetics and ideology visible. The findings were interpreted in the context of culture industry criticism. As a result, it has been determined that culture industry products and Netflix movie credits have similar qualities, and it has been revealed how movie credits are articulated to the ideological discourse of the culture industry with their technical and aesthetic features.
