Wedding traditions of mountain villages in Bursa province inthe context of cultural memory

Cultural memory plays a central role not only in the recollection of the past on an individual or societal level but also in the interpretation and redefinition of that past. As a crucial element in the construction of collective identity, cultural memory is shaped through historical events, traditions, rituals, and shared experiences. In this context, the transmission of social knowledge, values, and customs from generation to generation both reinforces individuals' sense of belonging and ensures the continuity of cultural heritage. Traditions handed down over generations allow for the preservation and communication of societal knowledge and values to future generations. Individuals who form a common identity may exhibit differences in social practices during this process. These differences are particularly evident during life transition periods such as birth, marriage, and death. The beliefs and practices associated with these periods deeply reflect the cultural values of the society. Marriage traditions represent a significant turning point for individuals and also reflect the historical and cultural heritage of the community. Among wedding customs in Bursa, henna nights hold particular cultural importance. Practices such as the "üç etek night" preceding the henna night and the "chicken-giving ritual" that follows are vivid examples of local cultural heritage. This study focuses on the wedding traditions practiced in the Orhaneli, Keles, and Büyükorhan districts of Bursa, aiming to analyze the content, functions, and historical transformations of these customs. Based on oral narratives, fieldwork, and cultural observations, the study evaluates how these traditions have been maintained or changed over time, thereby highlighting both the continuity and adaptability of cultural memory and contributing to the preservation and documentation of local heritage.
