Language barriers in intercultural communication

This study aims to examine the individual and societal impacts of language barriers in intercultural communication, to understand strategies for overcoming these barriers, and to explore the role of cultural context in communication processes. The research draws upon prominent theoretical frameworks in intercultural communication (Hall, Hofstede, Kim, Gumperz, Berry) and uses The Terminal as a case study to analyze language barriers in a tangible context. The film provides detailed insights into situations where individuals face verbal and cultural language barriers and highlights the strategies they develop to overcome these challenges. The study categorizes language barriers into two main dimensions: verbal language barriers and cultural language barriers. Verbal language barriers directly hinder individuals from meeting daily needs, defending their rights in formal processes, and establishing interpersonal relationships. In contrast, cultural language barriers transcend linguistic differences, arising from misunderstandings related to context, norms, and cultural codes. The findings reveal that language barriers create complex effects on individuals' social integration, cultural adaptation, and societal acceptance processes. Through thematic coding analysis, the study identifies four key themes: verbal language barriers, cultural code differences, communication strategies, and social adaptation processes. Verbal language barriers restrict individuals' sense of freedom and independence, while cultural code differences emerge as significant causes of miscommunication. Scenes from the film underscore the importance of strategies such as body language, visual aids, and empathy in overcoming language barriers. Notably, individuals compensate for their verbal communication deficiencies through social intelligence and creative problem-solving skills. The study's theoretical framework is rooted in key intercultural communication theories, including Hall's high-context and low-context cultural theory, Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, and Kim's cultural adaptation theory. These theories provide a robust foundation for understanding the multilayered nature of language barriers. The research emphasizes that addressing language barriers requires not only individual efforts but also societal and institutional support mechanisms. The findings contribute both theoretically and practically to the field of intercultural communication. Strategies such as cultural awareness, empathy, the use of body language, and visual aids are shown to be effective in mitigating language barriers. Moreover, the study concludes that understanding cultural context significantly reduces communication challenges. Additionally, the stress encountered during cultural adaptation processes, along with learning and growth, enhances individuals' cultural intelligence. This study offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the complexities of language barriers in intercultural communication and developing strategies to overcome them. Future research is encouraged to enrich these findings through field studies and analyses conducted in diverse contexts. By presenting theoretical and practical solutions for fostering more effective and inclusive communication in a globalized world, this research makes a unique and significant contribution to the field.
