Wisdom in the Quran

In this treatise we studied the term of 'wisdom' (hikma), one of the basic terms of the Holy Quran. In the first chapter, after giving its connations we dwelled upon the meaning of 'wisdom' in the Quran and phrases used alongwith it and its meaning when used together with them. In order to put forth the meanings of the word in the Quran we dealt with its synonyms and antonyms. It has been finally concluded that the word, by entering into the treasures of the words of the Quran, gained new and comprehensive richness of meanings. In the Quran, it is used in the meaning of prophethood, tradition, revelation, ability to think, sound decision in thoughts and acts and penetrating into or discovering the essence of things. In the second chapter, we dealt with the usage of 'wise' meaning the one having 'wisdom' in the Quran and gave information about its meanings when used about God, the Quran, the Prophets and people. In the third chapter, we studied the six meanings of 'wisdom' in the Quran and evaulate them generally. In the end, we concluded that 'wisdom' is a general term and must be explained without restricted to context wherever it occurs in the Quran. In the second section of this chapter, we dwelled upon the expression of 'call with wisdom' in the verse, "call (all) to the path of your Lord with wisdom" (An-Nahl 16.125) and it came out finally that this verse customerly understood in relation with the contents of the message in the sources of Classical Interpretation, in fact this verse also consists in method and style of the message. Also in this chapter, we finally studied the question of the categorization of this word in therotical and practical and came to the conclusion that this categorization is not true. For wisdom must be considered with the integrity of knowledge and practice and just as it is not possible to call knowledge only as wisdom so to it is not possible to call the practice without knowledge as wisdom. Therefore, such a usage can be accepted only as a metaphor.
