The term of reason/aql in Holy Quran

Reason, not only in islamic thought but also throughout all history of thinking, has been accepted to be an ability distinguishing human being from other creatures. Therefore, reason has been considered the basic of religious, legal and moral responsibility. The term 'reason' is found in fourty nine verses which are included in thirty suras under different headings. Our study aims at how the Holy Quran evaluates this important subject matter, for the term of reason is one of the 'key words' in Holy Quran. In the first chapter, the term reason, for its being better understanding, has been etymologically analyzed. Moreover, there exists the point of view of the sciences of philosophy, theology and sufism (mysticism) to the concerned topic. Also, in this part, 'reason-divinely revelation', one of the most major problems in history of thinking has been handled. In the second chapter, similar words associated with the term 'reason' in terms of meaning relation has been handled. It has been tried to make the similarities and differences of these words with 'reason' clear. In the third chapter, on the other hand, the relation of reason with concepts such as book, Quran, faith and heart based on the verses has been dealt with. Besides, the consequences of not using reason according to Quran have been evaluated. Our study ends with a general evaluation.
