Abstract (EN)

Paradoxically, though created by Allah as the most exalted being in the cosmos, human being has some defects in his/her nature. Of these defects, the case of oblivion that has been accrued through knowledge, experience, and experimentation, that is caused by certain effects. The concept of oblivion is one of the Qur??nic notions. It comes succinctly to denote ?forgetting?, and is mentioned in the Qur??n forty-five times in various molds for various meanings. What is more, in the had?ths of the Prophet this concept is used many times. This thesis, entitled ?the Concept of Oblivion in the Qur??n al-Kar?m?, consists of an Introduction, three Chapters, and of Conclusion. In the section of the Introduction, the subject matter of the study, its aim, and methods are explained. In that First Chapter, the lexicographic and etymological meanings of the concept of Oblivion are sought by delving into related sources. Moreover, in the aim to explicate in details synonyms and antonyms of these concepts are studied broadly. In the Second Chapter, the notion of oblivion is scrutinized within the frameworks of Qur??nic verses and had?ths. The meanings of oblivion are analyzed in accord with the following junctures: Circumstantial alterations, personal situations, episodic conjunctures, and Qur??nic warning mode related this concept. In doing so, both the exegeses of narration and of discernment in the milieu of various creedal affiliations are widely made use of. In addition, in this section, the concept is widely studied in terms of its usage in the science of Had?th, its importance in the İslâmic Canon Law, and its bearing on human actions. Lastly, the notion and cause of oblivion is analyzed in terms of the Modern Sciences. In the Third Chapter, certain causes of, and the ways obliterating oblivion gathered from the Qur'?n, Had?th, and the Modern Sciences are explained in separate chapters. In the section of Conclusion, the study is evaluated in general terms, and succinct information is given in order to frame the thesis.Keywords: the Qur??n, oblivion, forgetting, abandonment, Had?th, heedlessness.
