Sounds signifying meaning in the Qur'an–the judgement day verses

The Qur'an, which human beings are incapable of replicating, is a marvelous book. Its superior linguistic expression power is highlighted in the special way it employs letters, words and sentences. One of the most important features that underline the vitality and impressiveness of its style is undoubtedly the harmony between the linguistic style and the configuration of meaning in the text. In this study, the signification of sound, which is an aspect of the coherence between the linguistic style and the configuration of meaning, is examined in the context of the apocalyptic verses of the Qur'an. The study consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, after giving general evaluations of phonetics and semantics within the framework of linguistics, some basic features that come to the forefront of Arabic phonetics and the significance of sound are outlined. In the second part, the information determined about the significance of the coherance between sound and the configuration of meaning in the Qur'an is discussed in the light of some classical and contemporary scholars. Furthermore this part will further consider relevant characteristics of the Qur'an which are not reflected in the thoughts of classical and contemporary scholars. In the third part an application of the discussion of the previous chapters to the apocalyptic verses is discussed. The significance of sound to meaning is examined in the context of apocalyptic verses, both in terms of apocalypse and in the depictions of heaven and hell.
