Qur'anism and Mealism: The example of India and Türkiye

The balances has changed with the extraordinary situations which started from the eighteenth century in the World. The political supremacy in the hands of the Muslims began to pass to the West. When the West started taking actions with the colonial understanding because of the power they had, Muslim countries which lost their power in time falled into position of colony. Aside from whether they felt the danger bells started to ring before or not, the state of the occupation and the colonization they saw in their countries has caused that Muslims thought that they would not be able to establish a long- term future with the past they inherited. Some Muslims who made comparison between Islamic countries that started losing their power and the West that gained strength found that the difference was Islamic tradition. They asserted that many extra factors which has been added on to Islam covered the light of Islam so that the religion lost its illuminating feature. The Muslims who declared that what needs to be done was to separate the real Islam and those extra factors put the Quran in the center, and thus they tried to catch the era. As a result of this, a group of people called the Quraniyyun has emerged. In this thesis, although there were understandings that evoke the Quraniyyun movement in the early periods of Islam, the understanding of the modern period Quraniyyun movement has been examined. The example of India which is the homeland of this movement has been examined and the Quraniyyun in Türkiye where has been stopping point of this movement after India and Egypt has been discussed. The aim of our thesis is to compare the Quraniyyun movements in India and Türkiye. In terms of comparing this movement which has been experienced in different geographies by time and place, our thesis has an importance. Key Words: Tafsir, Qur'anism, Mealism.
