Biometric reflections of globalization: Andreas Gursky

Photography, which is a form of expression, increases its effect day by day since its invention. The photographic image, which is the product of the industrial revolution, has been moved to another dimension with digital technology in the last quarter of the 20th century. Globalization, another phenomenon of the same period, appears as another turning point in human history. Globalization, which is an ambiguous 'concept' due to its definition, has the feature of 'latent image' in terms of photography covers the entire vital area. While globalization finds a place in the verbal expressions of thinkers and theorists, its visual description has been the area of ​​interest of some artists. Andreas Gursky is one of the most important names describing globalization by using the language of photography and the possibilities of digital technology. According to Gursky, the path of globalization and digital photography crossed in the Berlin Wall axis in the early 1990s. The Berlin Wall, which collapsed in 1989, symbolizes the abolition of borders in the world. Gursky's gigantic work with high prices has been described as images of globalization. In this thesis, Gursky's 'Amazon' photograph has been examined by taking the semiotic analysis method into account and how it represents globalization.
