Effect of globalization on identity concept and nation state

With globalization, which is one of the popular concepts of today, the rapid change has been experienced in various fields, especially from the second half of the 20th century. The increased interaction between people, which is due to the developments in information and communication technologies, is shown as the main factor to this change. Today thanks to globalization, it is possible to talk about significant developments in political, cultural and economic fields. Although various definitions have been made on globalization, common points of these different definitions can be summarized as, the globalization is a process, there is no returning from globalization, and globalization affects the whole world. There are also different perspectives, such as globalist, internationalist and transformational, to the globalization proving that globalization is both a multi-dimensional term and a process. This study, in its most basic form, is based on the idea that "the phenomenon of globalization, which affects societies in various ways, will have effects on the identity, culture and nation-state model". Throughout the current study, effects of globalization on culture, identity and the nation-state model were discussed. The study was conducted based on a literature review with a descriptive understanding. According to the results of the study, globalization has multi-dimensional effects on culture. These effects sometimes exhibit homogenizing and sometimes differentiating properties. However, these effects were often considered to be hybridizing. In other words, unique cultural products emerge as the global and the local interact. The globalization process also has effects on people's perception of identity in various ways. As a result of these effects, it is understood that both discussion on the national identity is worn out and the efforts to protect the national identity have increased. Although still, no alternatives to the national identity model were produced, it can be said that with the effect of globalization, the understanding of nation identity has begun to erode. Another result of the study is on the effects of globalization on the nation-state model. Briefly, these effects are on i) the supranational structures that have started to limit the absolute sovereignty of the nation-state, ii) the traditional understanding of border and citizenship in the nation-states, iii) the erosion on the monist nation-state identity, iv) the sovereignty of the nation-state, and v) some changes in the administrative structure. However, despite all the changes, nation-states still continue to be an important "attachment center". Keywords: Globalization, Culture, Identity, Nation-State Model.
