The effects of globalization on media industry: Sample of Turkey

The media sector has become a power affecting societies socially, culturally, politically and economically while pushing its role as a news source into the background. In general terms, remarkable changes have occurred in the structure of the media sector, which results from neo-liberal policies and technological advances brought by globalization. There have also been changes in the status of the ownership of the media sector which has been affected by globalization. The employment policies of the media sector have also changed accordingly and a fast transition from labor - intensive manufacturing to technology - intensive manufacturing has taken place. It is observed that the Turkish media has parallel transformations with the world media resulting from the neo-liberal policies which were put into practice after the 1980's and the advances in technology as a result of globalization. Radical transformations and changes occurred in the Turkish media due to the policies applied after the January 24, 1980 decisions. The political structure of the country and fragile structure of the economy affected the Turkish media sector and the Turkish media has been transformed from family business journalism to a sector in which big holdings has become a monopoly and determiner of media employment policies and a sector supporting other business branches. In this study, the relationship between the media and globalization was analyzed regarding socio-cultural, political and economic factors and the transformations in the Turkish media sector in terms of economy was tried to be examined in detail.
