Abstract (EN)

This study deals with the ergativity in Kurmanji Kurdish. Ergativity is a grammatical pattern used in linguistics since the beginning of the 20th century and still been under discussion. Dixon (1994) claims that almost a quarter of the languages spoken around the world highlight ergativity and it comes out if the direct object of transitive clause is marked similarly to the subject of an intransitive clause but differently from the transitive subject. As this is the case with Kurmanji Kurdish in past transitive clauses, it is regarded to be an ergative language. But in all intransitive clauses and present tenses with both transitive and in transitive clauses it displays an accusative case system. In other words Kurmanji Kurdish has split-ergativity because it shows ergativity in past transitive clauses but accusativity in other cases. In the current study the usage and efficiency of ergative construction in written Kurmanji Kurdish were focused. For this purpose, a large number of examples of ergative construction from a Kurdish tafseer (exegesis of the Quran) were extracted, analysed and assessed in terms of correct usage and exceptional usages and misuse of ergativity. Although some examples of misuse of ergative construction were detected, the author seems to have used ergativity skilfully. We came to the conclusion that ergative pattern is quite effective in written Kurmanji and it's one the most important characteristic of the language. Besides, rules and features of ergative construction determined and explained in Kurdish grammar books are quite general and incomplete so they don't provide proper solution to some problems encountered on the topic.
