Kurdish, Turkish and English proverbs- a contextual comparison

Language is the most basic communication tool used by people from past to present. The main purpose of this study is to examine contextually the proverbs in Kurdish, Turkish and English and identify similar ones. In addition, for cases where there are no similar proverbs in all three languages, it is aimed to identify similar proverbs in Kurdish-English or Kurdish-Turkish. For our study, many books, articles, and scientific papers have been examined with the descriptive survey model, and a number of studies thought to be useful for this study have been determined. Our study consists of introduction, two chapters and conclusion. In the introduction; the purposes, significance, hypotheses, research questions for data collection, limitations of the study, and brief descriptions of the titles thought to be significant and methodology of the study are highlighted. In the first chapter; definition of the language, various opinions about the definition of language in general, the relationship between language and culture, cultural linguistics, linguistics and semantics relationship, the concept of proverbs, definition, features, classification of the proverbs, the relationship of proverbs with linguistics, the semantic role of proverbs in modern linguistics and the contextual study of the proverbs are investigated. In the second chapter, the proverbs in Kurdish, Turkish and English are examined according to the descriptive survey model, and the contextually similar ones are identified and interpreted. Also, proverbs which do not exist in the same context in all three languages; however, available in the same context in terms of Kurdish-English and Turkish-English have been examined as contextual and descriptive. In conclusion part, it is found that there are similar contextual proverbs in Kurdish, Turkish and English, and there are also similar proverbs found in the context of Turkish-Kurdish and Kurdish-English when there are no similar proverbs in all three languages.
