An analysis of the lexical aspect of the denominal verbs in the Kutadgu Bilig

This study aims at analyzing the lexical aspect of the denominal verbs in Old Turkic following a synchronic method. For this purpose, Kutadgu Bilig (KB) was chosen since it is a rich lexical and grammatical source and has been less affected from foreign languages. Denominal affixes of the period in KB were determined and verbs derived by these affixes were listed and the derived denominal verbs were categorized depending on the aspectual properties they possess. Unproductive affixes were not analyzed in this study. The results of the study show that denominal verb affixes were capable of producing items belonging to all the lexical aspect categories. The results also show that achievements have the highest frequency when compared to the other aspectual categories. There were 82 achievement verbs out of total 195 denominal verbs derived. The numbers of the other aspectual categories are as follows: 45 activity verbs, 33 stative verbs, 27 accomplishment verbs, and 8 semelfactive verbs.
