The Strategic importance of mining sector in the regional development of Kütahya

VI ABSTRACT All nations in the world must be powerful to have a respect from others and to continue their existence in today's global world. Countries having good and stable political, socio-economic, legal and tecnological systems will survive and have powerful words over others on this world. This power depends on the success and development of the systems mentioned above. In this study, the ways to become more effective in mining sector for Kütahya and this sector's importance for Kütahya relative to other cities around are examined. This study contains three main parts. In the first part of the study, the concepts of development, regional development and nature! resources have been examined on theoretical basis. When we presented development policies and regional develeopment policies, we also tired to examine, the strategies required for the success of development via using naturel resources. In the second part, a general analysis has been made for mining sector. Then the history of mining and tecnical and economical characteristics of mining are presented. In addition to these, under the information of Kutahya's mine map and regional geology, the potential power of mining and the potential development of the sector in Kütahya are analyzed. Depending on this analysis, socio-economic structure of Kütahya is examined. In the third part, the problems of mining sector in Kütahya and in Turkey are determined and appropriate solutions are proposed. To determine a strategic role of mining sector in the development of Kütahya, SWOT analysis is used. And finally, strategies to improve mining in Kütahya are tried to be developed.
