Kutbeddin İznikî, Mukaddime (Topkapı Copy, 151a-200b), introduction-the-text-translation-glossary

Catechism, as a term, means a handbook containing basic religious knowledge. The tradition of catechism began mostly in the form of translations of Arabic and Persian works and their expansion or annotation with additions. With the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, there was a tendency to write works in Turkish so that the public could reach understandable religious knowledge. Kutbeddin İznikî's Mukaddime is considered the first example of Turkish catechisms. The copy, which is the subject of our study, is registered under the name of An Anonymous Catechism Book in Istanbul Topkapı Palace Museum Library Revan Mansion 000630/1. No information was found about this copy in the sources. The entire copy has 453 leaves, each leaf consists of 9 lines. The date of its writing is unknown. It is written in black ink, in the naskh style. In our study, the 151a-200b page range of the work was examined. In the introduction part of the study, the tradition of the catechism, information about the work and its author, and briefly the language features of the work are mentioned. In the main part of the study, the transcription of the Arabic letter text, its Turkish translation and its glossary with the index are included. Arabic prayers and phrases are kept separate from the indexed glossary and added to the end of the dictionary. Finally, a facsimile of the text has been added to allow readers to compare.
