A garp quarry in North Africa: Algeria (Algeria-i Garban Quarry)(1789-1830)

The capitalist economic system that emerged in Europe in the 15th century brought along a new world order. In Braudel's words, Ottomans, who achieved a miracle and became a world empire, lost their ability to compete with the big states due to the problems they experienced in adapting to the capitalist economic system. This thesis studies the process of losing Algeria to France, which the Ottoman Empire dominated in 1534 and kept under dominance for about 300 years. There were certainly many reasons for the loss of the largest state in North Africa. In this thesis, the period started from 1789, which is an important date in terms of European and French history, to the year of 1830 when the occupation was completed. In 1815, France , whose capital was occupied by its biggest enemies, England and Russia, and whose state administrators were determined by these countries, occupied Algeria and made it a part of its own lands. Despite having colonies around the world, French political decision makers gave much importance to Algeria and recognized the region as a part of France. Therefore, the conquest of Algeria is an extremely important event in the history of France. The aim of this thesis is to reveal how Algeria was lost rather than by which country and how it was taken and how the events in this process leading to this seizure affected the historical process. In line with this purpose, our focus will be on how decisive the economic reasons are in the decisions taken by the countries in their international relations.
