Ill MUSIC EDUCATION IN TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS (Ph. D Thesis) K. Mete SUNGURTEKIN GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2003 ABSTRACT This study is conducted to investigate the general status of music education applied in Primary, Secondary, High School and Higher Education levels in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by considering particular dimensions, and in the light of these, to make a contribution to the development of music education with some suggestions. The model chosen for the study is based on status inventory. The data are gathered by means of interview, questionnaire and literature review, then analysed and discussed by using descriptive statistics. Based on these, by investigating the institutional structure of Musical Education in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the amount of its contribution to music education in present conditions is determined. Considering the general status of music education in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the present state of both music teachers working Primary or High School institutions and the instructors working in music education departments of universities, the views of private music instructors on music education and their specific qualifications, the success of music teaching programmes in the aforementioned institutions, teaching staff, physicalIV conditions, the difficulties met in teaching programmes together with views on the materials and tools used in teaching music and views and solutions on improving the socio-cultural and economic status of music educators are mentioned in this study.
