Monitoring of coastline change and risk analysis: An example of Sakarya - Karasu

Coastal areas are being destroyed while using for residental area, tourism, energy transportation, industry etc. Karasu, where is a touristic district on the Black Sea coast of Sakarya province, is faced with serious coastal erosion problem. This erosion has recently reached a size threatening urban structures. In this study, the determination of change in shoreline and usage of coastal zone at the chosen study area with the evaluation of satellite images and orthopoto image datas belonging to different times has been aimed. In this context, the of change in shoreline between 1987 ? 2013 has been followed. Then, the effects of off ? shore breakwaters to shoreline has been determined. After this stage, risk analysis has been performed consideration of the possible development processes of coastal erosion. As a result of the risk assessment, the coastline of off-shore breakwaters which was built were assessed as low risk. Coastline on both sides the mouth of the Sakarya River is considered as medium risk. Also, the coastline where the off-shore breakwaters will be built assessed as medium risk.
