İstanbul'da Suriyelilere yönelik kabul ve misafirperverlik

Since April 2011, a large number of Syrians escaped from the armed conflicts in their country started to enter Turkey by taking advantage of the Turkish government's open door policy. By the year 2017, according to official authorities, more than 90 percent of the Syrian population exceeding three million people is living outside refugee camps, in cities and towns. This study aims to present a detailed analysis of the reception and hospitality discourses and practices towards Syrian refugees in Istanbul which alone hosts 16 percent of this population. The concerned analysis is realized on the basis of the findings of the fieldwork carried out in Sultanbeyli, one of the most populated Syrian settlements in Istanbul. In the first part of this two-part study, hospitality discourses of the inhabitants of the Sultanbeyli district is analyzed. In the second part, the social services offered to the refugees by some of the non-governmental organizations operating in the district and the local authorities are approached within the framework of the hospitality discourse.
