Abstract (EN)

The fundamental question that shapes our understanding of the mind-brain relation is whether mental states are reducible to brain states. Moreover, the subjective features of the mental states, qualia, have significant importance in evaluating the reducibility of mental states to brain states. Notwithstanding the qualia-based objections of antireductionist approaches, the Churchlands argue that subjective qualities of mental states would not prevent the explanation of mental states in terms of brain states. However, in the absence of a descriptive theory of qualia, reducing the subjectivity of mental states to neurobiological functioning of the brain states seems to maintain its problematic state in the reductionist aspirations. This work focuses on exhibiting this problem in the Churchlands' neurocognitive reductionist approach.
