Life quality assessment of laboratory staff

OBJECTIVES: Job stress, stress resulting from the nature of the job, exhaustion, depression, secondary traumatic stress, empathy fatigue or occupational satisfaction are the factors that affect the quality of life of individuals. This study aimed to reveal the quality of life status of the laboratory staff of Sakarya University Training and Research Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The universe of this research consists of laboratory staff working in Sakarya University Education and Research Hospital. A questionnaire asking sociodemographic information and a short form of WHOQOL-BREF consisting of 27 questions were administered to the laboratory staff. The questionnaire was filled with face to face interview technique. Physical, psychological, social, environmental and national environmental sub-domains and overall scores of the participants were calculated. RESULTS: It was found that %52.3 of the participants were male, %64.6 were married and %92.3 were university graduates. When the health status of the employees was questioned, it was found that %83.1 did not have any health problems. When the life quality scores of the participants were examined; male employees' general health status (G4), physical health, psychological and social relations scores were higher than female employees; environmental and national environmental scores were lower (p>0.05). Physical health, psychological, social relations, environment, national environment scores of the participants' general health status (G4) were found to be higher in university graduates than high school graduates and those who identified themselves as healthy and those with existing diseases (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Quality of life plays an important role in providing health workers with a good and adequate service. We believe that improving the quality of life of health workers will increase productivity and satisfaction in both the work environment and private life. In order to be able to talk about a real quality of life, sufficient satisfaction should be provided in all these parameters. In addition, we believe that the implementation of the Quality of Life Scale in different regions and larger sample groups will increase awareness and solution suggestions.
