Pain relation between vascular access and postoperative diagnosis in patients with laparoscopic obesity surgery

The cognitive perception and psychological state of the person is important to measure the needle pain severity. The hypothesis is that "the severity of needle pain" may be a "predictive tool" to estimate the postoperative pain level and analgesic consumption of the individual. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between preoperative venipuncture pain and postoperative pain in patients scheduled for surgery in sleeve gastrectomy in our hospital. Eighty patients with sleeve gastrectomy were included in the study. Patients were asked to complete questionnaires including Pain Catastrophisation Scale, Beck Anxiety Scale, Beck Depression Scale and Distress Tolerance Test preoperatively. After venous access procedure, patient was asked to score the venipuncture pain using Numerical Rating Scale. Pain intensity of the patients were measured by Numerical Rating Scale at 10th minute, 2nd, 6th, 8th and 24th hours after extubation, and intravenous morphine was administered if the level of Numerical Rating Scale was over 3. There was a positive strong correlation between postoperative total analgesic consumption and the severity of venipuncture pain (r=0.838, p<0.001). Venipuncture pain was found as the positive predictor where evaluating the age, gender, weight, height, body mass index, educational status, marital status, smoker/non-smoker, venipuncture pain, pain catastrophizing scale score, distress tolerance test, beck depression test, and beck anxiety test on total analgesic consumption in a regression model (β =3.112, p<0.001). In conclusion, this study revelaed that individuals with higher venipuncture pain have a tendency to consume more analgesics compared to lower ones.
