The effects of lavender oil on the anxiety and vital signs of chronic otitis media patients in preoperative period

Abstract (EN)
Aim: This study was perfomed to determine effectsof lavender oil on levels of anxiety and vital signs of Chronic Otitis Media patients in preoperative period. Material and Method: This research was conducted between March 2017-May 2019 at the Ear Nose Throat clinics of Balcalı Hospital as a quasi-experimental research with pretest-posttest control group designs. The study population consisted of adult patients with KOM hospitalized and was suitable for research conditions at the ENT clinics of Çukurova University Balcalı Hospital. The sample group consisted of 88 patients(44 test, 44 control) selected with random sampling and determined according to power analysis.The collected data include: Patient İdentification Form, Patient Life Findings Form and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). In the experimental group; firstly patient identification form, patient registration form and STAI were applied to patients, after that lavender oil inhaled at least 5 minutes (mean: 5-10 min). Following this process STAI and patient registration form were applied again. For the control group, pre-test and post-test were performedwithout notapplied lavender oil inhaled and data were recorded. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, t-test was used for data analysis. Results: In according to the affectsof the lavender oil inhalation in experimental and control croups, it was found that there is significant difference in life signs after aromatherapy (p<0.05). While the mean SBP is 118.30±12.39, decreased to 107.50±11.44 . DBP rate is 74.09±9.96, decreased to 67.95±8.79 , pulse rate is 82.55±9.68, decreased to 72.18±7.46 , respiratory rate is 20.95±1.26, decreased to 19.32±1.49 after aromatherapy. Difference between groups; Pulse, SBP, DBP, and respiratory rate were statistically significant (p<0.05). Lavender oil inhalation positively affected the mesured parameters. Conclusion: Lavender oil inhalation positively affects preoperative anxiety levels of COM patients in terms of valuesin life findings.
